Rhinoceros are wild animals and they belong in the veld (field). As mega-herbivores, they are ecosystem engineers, playing a crucial role within the habitats that they have evolved. If we lose rhino species from the wild, we lose more than just the rhino. Poaching of rhino to supply the illegal and misguided Asian market demand for rhino horn is pushing these iconic species toward extinction. These images capture some of my favourite moments in the field, on foot, with wild white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).
