Animalia
This Gallery features images of animals from zoos, wildlife and safari parks. The captive environment gives the opportunity to get in close, and I like to take the opportunity to try to be a bit more artistic than the wild environment usually allows. The Animalia Gallery therefore features abstract images, and close-up macro photographs of exotic wildlife. Alternative animal portraits. My mission here is to focus on the beauty of nature, either by challenging the viewer or providing an intimate perspective.
Just as each species occupies a unique ecological role, so each species has something to offer from a photographic perspective. Featuring birds, mammals and reptiles, my images focus on shape, colour, eyes, camouflage, and moments of interest. I approach each species photographically in how best to capture and communicate its’ personality. If we gain anything from an image, be it an emotional (joy, sadness, empathy) or intellectual (interest, question, learning) response, then ideally we leave viewing the image with an increased impression of the value of the species.
Each species on Planet Earth is a component of the world’s biodiversity. Each species contributes to the ecosystem dynamics of its habitat. Our world is full of interaction; interaction with other members of the same species, interaction with habitat and other species, including ourselves. Be it a predator or herbivore interacting with its environment, or a huddle or chase between animals, nature is full of connections. If just one of my photographs connects with you then I have achieved my mission.
