Dawn on Loch an Eilein. Voted Scotland's favourite picnic spot. It is easy to see why. Blue light of early morning, vibrant green of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees, calm water, snow on the Cairngorm Hills. A beautiful view. Loch an Eilein translates from Gaelic as 'Loch of the island', and it is the island, and notably the 13th Century castle upon it that brings a historic atmosphere to the location. Inhabited sequentially by the Bishop of Moray, the Wolf of Badenoch (Alexander Stewart), and Patrick Grant of Rothiemurcus.
