Not much remains of Strome Castle, but this 'hole in the wall' provides a beautiful ancient rocky frame to a calm and wonderous landscape, across the bay, with the distant hills of the Isle of Skye in the background. The Camerons of Lochiel held the stronghold, but lost it to the Gordon Earl of Huntly in 1503. The castle was blown-up with gunpowder in 1602 by the Mackenzies of Kintail whilst held by the MacDonalds (or MacDonnels) of Glengarry.
